Mortal Kombat 1's DLC Pack 2, Explained (2)

While fans of Mortal Kombat 1 have complained about microtransactions and the Invasion mode is a bit rudimentary, NetherRealm Studios have finally revealed the DLC add-on for the incursions taking place in the story mode — Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns. This reveal took place at 2024's San Diego Comic-Con, which follows the mold of the Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath expansion.

Here, the game picks up on the MK1 ending and the new world made by the Fire God Liu Kang. The Titan Havik ended up invading after a battle that saw variants of both sides (good and evil) fighting each other on Blaze's pyramid from MK Armageddon. Liu Kang's heroes emerged victorious, but with Havik's army now seeping over, the game has also introduced its second DLC pack of fighters. And make no mistake, it's a diverse array of fighters that tie into the lore, and also, into the mainstream pop culture.

  • Sektor first appeared in Mortal Kombat 3 in 1995.
  • Sektor later appeared as a playable character in Ultimate Mortal Kombat, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Mortal Kombat Advance, Mortal Kombat Gold, MK: Tournament Edition, MK: Armageddon, and Mortal Kombat (2011).
  • Sektor made cameos in MK: Deception, MK: Unchained and MKX, and is a non-playable character in MK11.

In MK lore, Sektor was a Lin Kuei extremist. He had no problem being one of the ninjas who got turned into cyborgs. Unlike Cyrax and Smoke, he didn't care to ever rediscover his humanity. Sektor just enjoyed leveling up with his missiles and flamethrowers. He even rose to the rank of Grandmaster before Kuai Liang (the younger Sub-Zero) took back control and tried to reform the clan. It wasn't easy because many members, like Sektor, believed in the older Sub-Zero's (Bi-Han) thirst for blood.

The original Sektor returned in the Kameo Mode to assist fighters in battle. The Kombat Pack 2, though, switches this up drastically. This purchasable Sektor is a female who seems to be from another reality. But instead of being a robot, she is wearing a suit like Iron Man or Rescue. She is a hero, so it might be she is a new character or a spin on a current one like Li Mei.

She has the signature Sektor weapons in battle as she flies around in her armor. It has fans eager to see how she clashes with the Lin Kuei on this Earth where Bi-Han has Sektor (a human scientist) creating cyborgs so he can try to usurp Liu Kang's rulership. The female Sektor will surely have to deal with the Lin Kuei and Havik's forces as she tries to bring peace to all realms alongside Liu Kang's coalition.

10 Scariest Mortal Kombat DLC Villains

The Mortal Kombat games have had an array of terrifying villains who are on missions to make audiences squirm through many squeamish kills.

  • Cyrax first appeared in Mortal Kombat 3 in 1995.
  • Cyrax later appeared as a playable character in Ultimate Mortal Kombat, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Mortal Kombat Gold, Mortal Kombat Advance, Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition, Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, Mortal Kombat (2011) and Mortal Kombat: Onslaught.
  • Cyrax made cameos in MK: Deception, MK: Unchained and MKX, and is a non-playable character in MK11.

Cyrax was an African male ninja who struggled with his directive when he was turned into a robot. He tried to fight his programming. Kuai Liang, Jax and Sonya would help free him and pave a road to redemption. His soul was restored, but before Liu Kang built this new world, Cyrax died in a massive sacrifice.

The female Cyrax is an African warrior. She finds Kuai Liang in his Scorpion form. He doesn't like how the Lin Kuei embraced technology, thinking these war suits are an abomination. Cyrax is adamant, though, she is here to help and that it's Kuai Liang's world that pulled her over due to the incursions.

Notably, her battle mode (which includes traps, bombs and teleportation) hints they mixed sorcery and science in their suits. The Prime Bi-Han is focusing only on metal and machine, as he thinks magic would attract Liu Kang's gaze. This teases two different styles for when the Lin Kuei clans clash.

Mortal Kombat has a wide roster of eclectic characters, but when it comes to its many female fighters, stand out more than others.

  • Noob Saibot debuted in 1993's Mortal Kombat II as an unplayable/secret boss.
  • He was also in Mortal Kombat 3 as an unplayable/secret boss).
  • Noob Saibot later appeared in Ultimate Mortal Kombat, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (unplayable in Arcade only), Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Mortal Kombat Advance, Mortal Kombat 4, Mortal Kombat Gold, MK: Tournament Edition, MK: Shaolin Monks, MK: Armageddon, Mortal Kombat (2011), Mortal Kombat Mobile, Mortal Kombat 11, and Mortal Kombat: Onslaught.
  • He was in MK: Deception (sub-boss), MK: Unchained (sub-boss) and made a cameo in MKX.

In the old MK timeline, Bi-Han was turned into a wraith by Quan Chi. Kuai Liang tried to free this shadow revenant and allow his brother's soul to find peace again. But Bi-Han embraced the dark side. In time, he became Noob Smoke. He had Smoke (aka Tomas) bonded to him to create a more dangerous warrior. It was punishment for Smoke wanting to be freed of his robotic programming from the Lin Kuei.

The new timeline has Tomas working with Kuai Liang to form the Shirai Ryu, which is training the likes of Takeda. They don't like what Bi-Han is doing, so they want to stop him with an army of their own. Notably, the Kombat Pack 2 shows an upgraded Noob Saibot emerging. This Titan form has been modified by Havik's black magic, although it is uncertain if Bi-Han initially agreed to it, or if he was dead and resurrected. It shapes Havik as a dangerous sorcerer and necromancer, just like how the old Quan Chi was.

Shockingly, this wraith has a Smoke bonded to him, too. It promises drama to come when the main reality's Kuai Liang, Tomas and Bi-Han see how far the Bi-Han variant will go to consolidate power. This could encourage Prime Bi-Han to scrub his ways and use the Lin Kuei for good, or double down on being a tyrant. The Noob Saibot variant, after all, has teleporting power, sends Smoke out as a bodyguard, and uses his mystical abilities to rip people apart. This might encourage Bi-Han to use more of the dark mystical arts.

  • Conan was created by Robert E. Howard in 1932.
  • He first debuted in Weird Tales: an American fantasy and horror fiction pulp magazine founded by J. C. Henneberger and J. M. Lansinger.
  • Conan was also played by Jason Momoa in a 2011 movie.
  • Conan was the focus of two cartoons: 1992's Conan the Adventurer and 1994's Conan and the Young Warriors.
  • Conan was voiced by Ron Perlman in a 2007 video game. He also had a solo game in 2017, Conan Exiles.

MK1 will be adding Conan to the mix. Clearly, the developers love Arnold Schwarzenegger's likeness. They used his T-800 in MK11. Chris Cox voiced the character with Schwarzenegger's blessing then, but it's unknown who's doing the voice now. The trailer doesn't show Conan in action; it just has the character posing. Nonetheless, fans of Robert E. Howard's character will be stoked.

Conan will definitely be using his shield and sword to batter people. In the lore, he wreaked havoc in the Hyborian age, fighting monsters, mages and such — something Marvel Comics expanded on by placing him with teams such as the Savage Avengers when they had the rights to him. Schwarzenegger's depiction is the most famous one, as fans lapped up the epic fantasy adventures in 1982's Conan the Barbarian and 1984's Conan the Destroyer. This reveal has fans wondering if relics, monsters and even villains like Shuma Gorath, Kull, or Kulan Gath came over from Conan's timeline, too.

  • Terminator 2 was released in 1991.
  • It was directed by James Cameron.
  • It was written by Cameron and William Wisher.
  • The budget was $94-102 million, with the box office haul being $519-520.9 million; a resounding success.

The Kombat Pack 2 is also bringing Robert Patrick's T-1000 into the fold. He will be voicing the character as well. Fans will recall Terminator 2: Judgment Day, where this Terminator was sent back to kill Sarah Connor and her son John. Schwarzenegger's T-800 was the hero protecting them this time after the resistance sent him back as a countermeasure. It wasn't easy as the T-1000 was stronger, faster and shape-shifted into people and objects due to being made from liquid metal.

This creates enticing possibilities, from mimicking people in dialogue scenes to possibly being able to phase through attacks. The T-1000 isn't seen in action. It creates a ton of mystery and proves that NetherRealm Studios knows how to keep some secrets hidden. That said, fans are eager to learn if his main goal is finding Kronika and Geras' Hourglass and messing with time so that Skynet can rule all realities.

  • Ghostface debuted in 1996's Scream.
  • The slasher's mantle has appeared in six films so far.
  • Ghostface was also involved in the TV series, which ran from 2015 to 2019 for three seasons and 30 episodes.
  • Ghostface was a DLC character in the Dead by Daylight video game in 2019.
  • The slasher is a playable operator in Season Six of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Call of Duty: Warzone.
  • In 2022, Ghostface was added as a free playable skin in the online multiplayer social deduction game, Among Us.

Ghostface will be joining the game as well. The iconic killer from Scream is just seen reciting his iconic line: "Do you like scary movies?" — made even better by original voice actor Roger L. Jackson being back in the role. He's seen holding his knife in the brief snippet, playing on the game's love of slashers. MK has used Leatherface, Freddy Krueger and Jason Vorhees in the past.

This confirms that there is synergy between this DLC pack to what was done before. MK knows what gimmicks to deploy and what their fans want, diving into movies, comics and cartoons for new faces. It has been evident by how popular Mortal Kombat 1's Homelander has been, as well as with Mortal Kombat 1's Omni-Man. Sure, fans will complain about monetization, but this is a roster that folks who play the game will purchase. Ghostface best sums it up. He has epic lines for intros, and loves disemboweling and taunting people. And ultimately, he is all about spreading havoc the way that the Titan Havik wants.

The Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns expansion and Kombat Pack 2 with Sektor and Cyrax will be released on Sep. 24, 2024. The other guest characters will be released at a later date.
